Out of This World

With her new record, 21st century phenomenon Janelle Monae provides the soundtrack for her own Space Odyssey

Story by Angela Cravens / Photography by Marc Baptiste

Janelle Monae

An alien walks among us. She’s taken the form of a pop star (all the better to reach total world domination), though we’d be mistaken to assume she’s just another songstress on the scene with a serious voice. To know Janelle Monae’s music is to have her take you firmly by the hand and lead you into outer space. And though you may not have the foggiest idea where exactly you’re going, trust that she’s got it under control—and the ride will be sweet.

Tequila Sunrise

By Alexander Wolf, May 3rd, 2010

It’s going to be a hot one on Thursday in NYC—so there’s no better time to dip into some of Tanteo tequila’s fresh summery cocktails. Mixologist Jason Mendenhall has designed an extensive range of refreshing drinks using each of Tanteo’s distinct spirits—Jalapeño, Tropical, and Chocolate (yes, chocolate!) tequilas. Here’s our favorite recipe, but for more ideas click here.

Watermelon Tanteador
2 oz. | Tanteo® Jalapeño Tequila
1 oz. | Watermelon Juice
1/2 oz. | Simple Syrup
1/2 oz. | Fresh Lime Juice
3 Fresh Cilantro Leaves

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice
Shake well and strain into chilled Champagne coupe glass
Garnish with a sprig of cilantro [ . . . ]

Yurman himself will be on hand at Thursday’s shopping event, which will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We’ll be snapping pics and chatting with the man himself!

Tanuki Tavern

Tanuki Tavern

The restaurant I’ll be dashing to after long days of hopping around New York Fashion Week (especially from shows at Milk Studios, just a couple blocks away) is the recently opened Tanuki Tavern. Located in prime Meatpacking District, I’ve already become taken by its endearing decor and twist on a traditional Japanese izakaya. The easy to share-sized plates offer a little something for everyone (the kimchi fried rice was my favorite) and the prices are surprisingly diminutive. The greatest plus is that Tanuki is open until 4 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday — perfect for a late night bite after hitting the party circuit.

Leica x Hermès camera

By Alexander Wolf, February 11th, 2010

Leica x Hermès camera
There is no juxtaposition of luxury brands I find more drool-inspiring, no premium collaboration more certain to reduce me instantly to a state of quivering Pavlovian lust, than this ridiculously gorgeous Leica x Hermès camera. And of course, with the Parisian house being the epitome of timeless elegance, their magic has been worked on the M7 model, the most recent of the 35mm film models, rather than one of the newer digital appareils. As CITY’s Fashion Director Allan Kennedy (an M7 owner) says, you can’t take a bad picture with one of these. The lens is a gorgeous silver-anodized 35mm f1.4 with a hood that’s unique to the Hermès models. The body and the carrying strap of the camera are of Swift calfskin, “a drummed leather with extreme suppleness,” says my release, and they come in étoupe and orange. As Jessica Simpson almost said in The Dukes of Hazzard, I don’t even know what étoupe is but I wawn it. There are 200 of these made in each color, and while my information doesn’t include the price, I would hazard a guess that fairly decent cars can be had for less. Not the point, of course; if you need to ask then like me you obviously can’t afford it. But hey, as Karl Marx said, salivating all down your shirt front, puce with class envy, is one of life’s better (free) diversions.
