Easy Rider

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 22nd, 2010

Aviator frames are already pretty rough and tough on their own (think Marlon Brando in The Wild One and you’ll get the idea). Add a bit of leather to the mix and you’ve got shades meant to wear while straddling a Harley. Though we don’t know if that’s what Gucci had in mind with their new eyewear collection, we’d like to imagine ourselves urban cowboys in these new frames.

Hit the Slopes

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 20th, 2010

With the frost of December and January slowly approaching, it’s about that time to start daydreaming about a winter wonderland getaway. And if you’re going to hit the slopes in style, best to do it in Chanel’s skis. Retailing at a splurge of $4,055, these skis (and grab the goggles, too) are all you’ll need to make everyone else in the cabins envious. View the ski and snowboard options on Chanel’s website to start your holiday dreams of sugarplums and Chanel sport.

iMissoni

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 20th, 2010

Missoni—one of our all time favorite brands—has recently launched its very own iPhone app, and the results are molto bello. Browse the most current collections, watch runway videos, keep up to date with press and find store locations. For fans of the brand, it’s a one-stop-spot. And best of all, it’s free. Navigate yourself over to the iTunes store to download it, and then over to Missoni shops to check out the goods in person.

Spooky Spirits

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 15th, 2010

We may not have our costumes yet, but we’re already in the Halloween spirit with the help of some spooky cocktails. Mixologist Claire Smith at Belvedere is helping us dive head first into fall with two seasonal drinks. Forget those pumpkin lattes and apple ciders—make ours a Berry Scary Sour or a Bloody Mary Martini. Check out the recipes after the jump for your upcoming Halloween party (or for your average October Friday).

Tribal Treats

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 14th, 2010

It’s good to know that we’re not the only ones who are fans of nOir jewelry—it looks like Gwen Stefani is, too. For the Spring/Summer 2011 L.A.M.B show, Gwen’s models stomped down the runway with necks and wrists donned in the architectural and tribal constructions of nOir’s Fall 2010 collection. Whether the pieces bear sharp, jagged edges, or softer, feather-like drapery, the collection speaks to someone who wants their jewelry to do the same. For more info on the collections, take a look at nOir’s website, and for some of our favorites, take a look after the jump.

What’s Happening This Week

Do Not Abandon Me

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 8th, 2010

When the right two artists come together in collaboration, the end result is often a celebration of two like minds. Do Not Abandon Me, a 16-piece series of drawings by Louise Bourgeois and Tracey Emin on view now at Carolina Nitsch, reflects just that and more. The gouache drawings by Bourgeois, which Emin “responded” to with handwritten text, overlaid line drawings and more gouache, are also the culmination of a genuine friendship. Despite a 50 year age gap, Bourgeois and Emin’s collaboration revolves around their similar studies of sexuality, attachment and abandonment, and longing for a connection with another.

Les Tentations de CHANEL

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 8th, 2010

One good reason to avoid the temptation of winter hibernation is this year’s holiday makeup collection from Chanel. With warm blends of chocolates and pops of vivacious fuchsias, they’re anything but December drab—in fact, with a name like Les Tentations de Chanel, they’re downright decadent. The Les Tissages de Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect is just as classic as a Chanel tweed suit (even looks like one), and the special edition Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Tentation Cuivré is the ideal mix of dramatic browns and subtle pinks. Take a look after the jump for a few more reasons as to why we’re already counting down the days until Christmas—or at least until we make it to Chanel boutiques and department stores when the collection hits the stands this month.

Dark Denim

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 6th, 2010

With the recent Indian summer finally behind us (for now, at least), it’s that time of year to bring out the denim. For their Fall 2010 collection, French line April 77 gets down to brass tacks and returns to its roots with a five-fit strong denim collection. Fan’s of the brand now have good reason to celebrate: coming mid-November, the line will be available on April 77’s long-awaited online store. And since the collection is over-simplified for those who would rather do anything than shop for jeans (literally, just pick: super-skinny, skinny, slim, straight and tapered) there’s really not much to finding the perfect pair. Plus, each purchase gets you a code to download exclusive songs from some of the brand’s favorite bands.

CITY Mural: The Video

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 6th, 2010

Remember our amazing mural on Crosby and Broome that we kept telling you about? Well now there’s a video! Check out behind-the-scenes footage of the smart New York City murals projects—ours is the first (and we say best) one.

Like a Cat in the Dark

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 5th, 2010

We’ve always been a fan of anything and everything Kim Gordon (like the previously-featured Noise Paintings that were on display at John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller). To celebrate the fifth anniversary of downtown fashion and art label No. 6, Gordon has produced a collection of 14 single-word paintings. Similar to the Noise Paintings, which bared the name of a favorite noise band (Hair Police, Testical Hazard, Pussy Galore), each painting for the No. 6 collection contains a word chosen from a line in Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”: “she is like a cat in the dark, and then she is the darkness.” The paintings were compiled as sets in a simple black portfolio, and are available for $40 online as well at the No. 6 store (6 Centre Market Place). In addition to the prints, No. 6 also designed two tee shirts available for purchase in the same style, reading either “she” or “darkness.” Which one are you?

Suit Yourself

By Tiffany Yannetta, October 1st, 2010

Alas, the epitome of menswear luxury has arrived at Prada: the made-to-measure program. Any man whose ever put on a suit, let alone had one precisely custom-made to fit his body, knows that the beauty of a perfect, timeless suit lies in the masterful tailoring and pristine details. With expert tailors trained in Italy and Prada’s reputation, what better hands to help you pick a lining and select the best collar? The made-to-measure program includes shirting, suits and jackets, and all of the garments are made at the Belvest factory in Italy. With a choice of over 250 suiting fabrics, 40 coat fabrics, and shirting options that range from classic solids to vintage Prada prints, the possibilities are endless.

Bed of Roses

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 30th, 2010

The D&G Spring/Summer 2011 show was the garden party of dreams; imagine gingham and overalls by day, and flowing chiffon by night. The runway was strewn with roses and peonies, and the models took to the catwalks in every floral print imaginable. The show began with ensembles meant for working amidst the hydrangeas—like canvas pants, midriff gingham tops and one-pieces with adorning head scarves—and slowly built up to cocktail length dresses and floor-length billowing gowns.

MoMa: New Photography

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 29th, 2010

For the past 25 years, the MoMA has held its annual New Photography exhibition, and this year (opening today through January 10) the exhibit features work by Roe Ethridge, Elad Lassry, Alex Prager and Amanda Ross-Ho. This go-around, two films have even been included—Alex Prager’s Desire, and Elad Lassry’s Untitled—a first for the New Photography showcase.

In the Bag

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 27th, 2010

What better excuse to pick up a new bag for fall then if it retails under $400—and looks cute, to boot. This season, we’re digging the new Michael by Michael Kors bags, especially the Large Satchel in Camo Leather ($328) and the Hamilton Large Tote in Luggage Leather ($298). See what we mean after the jump.

Ben Sherman Gets Nicked!

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 23rd, 2010

As we comb through our favorite New York Fashion Week moments, our neighbors at Ben Sherman on Spring St. are at the top of our list with their delightful little prank—or anthropological case study on your average New Yorker. What happens when you hang a “Shop Load of Shirts” outside your store windows? Watch the video after the cut to find out.

Hot Off the Runway

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 22nd, 2010

Despite all the buzz from the Spring/Summer 2011 collections, Lauren by Ralph Lauren is reminding you to keep an eye on Fall. This Thursday, the Fall 2010 Lauren by Ralph Lauren show will play on the brand’s website, with a video that allows you to not only shop and purchase the items as the models walk down the runway in them, but also features front-row chatter from editors and stylists. If you ever wondered what it’d be like to have Nina Garcia help you chose an outfit, here’s your chance.

Environmental Estethica

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 22nd, 2010

We’ve seen a lot of impressive things coming out of London Fashion Week this year, but perhaps one of the most impressive is the collaboration between yoox.com and The British Fashion Council. On their website, yoox.com has a department called YOOXYGEN, which since 2009 has been a place that features innovative, eco-friendly designers and products. This London Fashion Week, YOOXYGEN has showcased London’s Estethica designers on the site—all the more proof that environmentally sustainable materials and eco-friendly products are sweeping over London.

GANT by Michael Bastian SS11

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 20th, 2010

It looks like love is already in the air for Spring/Summer 2011, particularly throughout the GANT by Michael Bastian lines. Yes, thats right: lines. This Fashion Week marked the debut of Michael Bastian’s first-ever women’s collection, and he couldn’t have picked more of a woman to base his designs around: the woman, Marilyn Monroe. And for the men’s line? Joe Dimaggio and Arthur Miller. As he puts it, the SS11 collection is the “unlikely combination of the sports nerd and the bombshell finding each other and falling in love.”

ArtBattles at LACOSTE L!VE

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 17th, 2010

LACOSTE L!VE—the hip and rebellious offspring of the Lacoste family—recently opened up their first shop in SoHo, and they’ll be celebrating tomorrow with a live Art Battle featuring Sean Ono and See One. Head on over to the shop (134 Prince St.) from 2-5pm to get in on the action. Cause after all, art and fashion—just like graffiti and New York—go hand in hand.

Double Vision

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 17th, 2010

A good pair of shades is just as much of a necessity throughout the fall as they are in the summer months, and this season Juicy Couture’s “Create” collection gives you two reasons to pick up a pair: each of the wonderfully over-sized, vintage-inspired frames comes with an additional set of colorful temples, so you can switch up the specs to match your outfit (or mood). The interchangeable temples come in contrasting colors—think pink with teal, coral with tortoise—retail at around $120 a pair, and are available at Juicy Couture Boutiques, Solstice Sunglass Boutiques, and select department stores. Now that’s out of sight.

Take a Penny, Leave a Penny

By Tiffany Yannetta, September 17th, 2010

We’re guilty as charged for already splurging on our fall wardrobes, but the new LA-based online boutique Pretty Pennies makes us feel better about doing so. Home to some of our favorite (see: afforable!) brands like Cheap Monday, Wildfox, BB Dakota, Sophmore, RVCA and Creative Recreation, shopping for cute tee shirts, little party dresses and shoes galore has gotten a whole lot healthier for your wallet. Wanna know how you can save even more pennies? You’ve got to know the secret passcode, but lucky for you, we’re willing to share: enter “citymag” at your checkout and get 15% off your entire purchase.
