40th Anniversary of Earth Day

By Eva Medoff, April 16th, 2010

Earth Day is all the rage in the fashion world. In fact, green/organic clothing has experienced a surge in general—as we’ve talked about before. As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, we note two companies, Rachel Roy and Louis Vuitton, who are taking varied approaches to lend a helping hand to the environment.

Rachel Roy’s new program for her lower-priced line, Rachel Rachel Roy: Recycled Reused, kicks off with a neutral, organic sweater. Fashioned from eco-tec yarn, reused fabric scraps and reclaimed buttons, the every-day cardigan (available at Macy’s) will be a staple in your closet as well as in your effort to go green.

Louis Vuitton, on a different note, is donating 10 percent of its proceeds on Earth Day to Global Green USA. When you buy items on the LV site, they will go to benefit the charity’s Green Schools Initiative. Additionally, Louis Vuitton has tapped its fashion friends (including actresses Zoe Saldana, Rashida Zones and Abbie Cornish, singer Pharrell Williams, stylist Rachel Zoe and Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley) to share ways that they help the environment. Ignore the subtle patronizing undertone of celebrity preaching and focus on the positives: cheaper clothes, and a cleaner earth.
