For lovers of abstract art, there’s Susan Hefuna: an Egyptian-German artist whose geometrical creations resemble solar systems and construction sites. Only in the art world can something evoke both a chromosome and a painter’s ladder.

Her drawings, on view now at the Paul Kasmin Gallery through May 1st, are often made by layering ink and pencil sketches on tracing paper. The effect is slightly familiar and slightly otherworldly, with delicate red, black and pink shapes that, like an optical illusion, only take on meaning in the eye of the beholder.
