All American Without Going Overboard

By Marisa Steinberg, June 28th, 2012

Although I know the notion to be entirely false, I can’t help but sometimes feel that when it comes to clothing, the words “patriotic”‘and “style” are mutually exclusive, that we hit a brick wall at airbrushed tee shirts with majestic eagles on it and stars and stripes visors. However, a quick glance at menswear collections this season assures me that this Fourth of July there is a world beyond ketchup stained Old Navy flag tees. Here, our picks for a sartorially spirited Independence Day without a single set of stars and stripes in the bunch.

Topman Azure Blue Skinny Suit; $400, topman.com
A sharply tailored suit is sleek enough to handle a saturated shade like azure.

Italia Independent X Care Label Denim Detail Sunglasses;$198, farfetch.com
Red wayfarers with denim accents? Almost as American as apple pie.

Topman Grey Stars and Stripes Hat; $32, topman.com
OK, I know I said no stars and stripes, but even if you’re a fedora fellow, a star spangled baseball cap will feel so right on Independence Day.

Christian Louboutin Havana Men’s Flat; $795, christianlouboutin.com
After hours of barbecuing, kick up your feet and show you patriotism all the way down to the soles of your shoes. Always feels good to find an excuse to indulge in a pair, doesn’t it?
