Although the World Cup is taking place all across South Africa, Cape Town is no doubt the most chic and scenic of its locations. Nestled at the foot of Table Mountain and bordered by vertical cliff-faces and the crashing ocean, natural beauty abounds. Take a moment away from the natural splendor (and one of the five football matches taking place at Green Point Stadium), however, to check out some of these cultural hotspots.
WHERE TO STAY:
Hit two birds with one stone at the One&Only Cape Town (Dock Road, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, oneandonlyresorts.com), where you can get a taste of the local art scene, with its bold installations and ample gallery space, while marveling at the natural beauty of the Victoria and Alfred waterfront.
WHERE TO SHOP:
Head to the vibrant and bustling Cape Quarter (72 Waterkant St.) and take advantage of its galleries, boutiques and home décor shops. While there, be sure to pick up bikinis or resort-wear at Alexandra Del Lago. For authentic African art, head to the A.R.T. Gallery (Main Rd., Kalk Bay), where you can acquire ceramics, textiles and woodwork with a Cape Town-flair.
WHERE TO EAT:
See what the seafood of South Africa brings to Japanese cuisine at the Cape Town outpost of Nobu, located conveniently inside the One&Only. While you’re there, be sure to also check out Gordon Ramsey’s Maze, which promises to bring you the same tasting-sized dishes as the London original, but with traditional South African recipes and a larger-than-life wine collection.
WHAT TO SEE:
See how South Africa does contemporary art at the Goodman Art Gallery (176 Sir Lowry Road) as they celebrate the World Cup with Eleven/TwentyTen, a collection of site-specific shows around Cape Town. Envelop yourself in the natural landscape at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, where you can take in the local flora and fauna as well as some excellent tea.
