For the Hat Connoisseur

By Kayi Tsang, April 13th, 2012

Established in 1922, Bailey of Hollywood has produced fedoras, bowlers, and caps of unparalleled quality and design for Hollywood icons and hat aficionados. Now for the first time in its 90 year history, Bailey of Hollywood will offer its customers the rare Montecristi Panama hat.

Introduced in 19th century Paris when Napoleon the Third was spotted wearing the Montecristi Panama, this hat has become a timeless headwear trend. The Montecristi is named after a like-named Ecuadorian town where skilled artisans have hand weaved these fine hats for hundreds of years. Known as the world’s finest straw hat, the Montecristi Panama is made from a plant called Paja Toquillap, which weaves into a material that has the tough touch of linen but the lightness of silk. The precision in straw cutting and weaving required for the Montecristi Panama makes this hat one of the most sought after treasures of hat connoisseurs.

This season, Bailey of Hollywood has created four designs for the Montecristi Panama, each decorated with Italian grosgrain bands of a custom origami design: Twisted Crown, Square Crown, Deep Dip Crown, and Teardrop Crown.
