MGMT’s Flash Delirium
By Eva Medoff, April 5th, 2010
With their first album, MGMT went from Wesleyan college kids to opening band for Paul McCartney. And if their first single off their sophomore effort, “Congratulations” (out April 13th) is any indicator, it seems they’ll expand even further into Avant-garde psychedelia. We’ve got the video for proof.
Directed by Andreas Nilsson, the Swedish mastermind behind videos for Goldfrapp and The Knife, the video for “Flash Delirium” features a mansion, a poodle and choreographed dance scenes with senior citizens. There’s also ventriloquists, military uniforms and some sort of eel that’s pulled out of Ben Goldwasser’s throat. We mentioned Avant-garde, right?
Since the album was leaked, you can listen to it on MGMT’s website (it’s also available for pre-order). So, is the video an artistic move forward or a rebellion against their own popularity and a push against the boundaries of accessibility? You decide.
