Aquatic inspired accessories made a splash in Spring 2012 collections from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Givenchy, and Versace. Jewelry, handbags, and shoes all bore an oceanic feel.
The marine theme took many forms; Givenchy utilized oversized shark tooth necklaces, while Versace displayed seahorse, nautilus, and starfish printed purses, and McQueen and Chanel translated the look through materials such as coral, shells, and pearls.
This look is more whimsical and laid back than the nautical trend, embracing the movement of waves and the natural patterns and textures found under the sea. Think mermaid, not sailor.
If you’re ready to take the plunge, go for a literal translation with a bold print or a piece of shell-shaped jewelry. Only looking to take a dip in the trend? Put on a maritime colored shoe in blue or sea foam green or incorporate coral and pearl pieces into your look.
