Out of Africa
By Eva Medoff, March 30th, 2010
Call it girly, perky or kitschy—but Victoria’s Secret PINK collection has successfully packaged female youth into a neat, pink polka-dotted box. Now the face of Pink, Namibian-born model Behati Prinsloo, is applying her African heritage to the pop formula: and the result, a line of swim wear in Technicolor tribal prints and playful shapes, will fit right in with the PINK canon.
Two tunics straight from the disco era, one studded and one macramé, are joined by bikinis and a one-piece in all-over psychedelic prints. The teal, black and white and blood red swimsuits are accessorized by hoops and contrasting-patterned strings. And then there’s the tiger bikini: gold-hooped, leopard-printed and featuring a roaring tiger across the front, it leaves nothing to the imagination—but goes along nicely with the African theme. The line ranges from $24.50 (for an elephant T-shirt) to $49.50 (for the macramé tunic), with bikini tops and bottoms sold separately. It will be available in PINK stores mid-April, allowing PINK fans to get a head start on their summer look.
