Surreal Surroundings

From John Galliano’s shrouded Russian brides to Grace Coddington’s reinterpretation of Hansel and Gretel, fashion is, and always has been, about fantasy. Moschino is no longer offering fantasy through things you can wear, however. They’re now offering an entire fantasy world you can enter, through their new Milan-based hotel, Maison Moschino.

If designer hotels seem like the new fad (see: Armani Hotel), Moschino has taken a slightly different approach. Rather than merely mirroring the aesthetic of the clothes, each room takes an outlandish, fantastical concept and attempts to bring it to life. Whether it’s from storied literature (“Alice’s Room,” “Red Riding Room”), or simply a magical context (“The Forest,” “The Gold Room”) each of the 65 rooms seeks to provide a unique experience. If fairy tales aren’t your thing, you might consider “The Sweet Room,” with enormous cupcake and fruit tart pillows, or “Sleeping in Eveningwear,” in which the bed consists of a giant evening gown.

Not everything is full of whimsy at Maison Moschino, however. Housed in a 19th century building, Creative Director Rosella Jardini also made sure the hotel was outfitted with a spa, gym and Turkish bath. And in case you’re just dying to know how to get your hands on that handbag table lamp, the lobby Boutique has you covered: everything within Maison Moschino is for sale.
