The Cult of Kate
By Eva Medoff, March 13th, 2010
There is a sense in the fashion world that anything Kate Moss (whose personal style captivates people just as much as the brands she represents) touches turns to gold. Longchamp, the French leather craftsmen, are ready to test that theory out with a line of signature hand bags christened, simply, Kate Moss for Longchamp. The long-running face of the brand (eight seasons, to be exact) has loaned her personal taste and preferences to a collection of bags encompassing everything from travel duffels to envelope clutches—all, with a zebra print here and a braided detail there, designed to emanate the effortless cool of Kate.
As a collaboration between Kate and Longchamp Artistic Director Sophie Delafontaine, the collection is designed to work in various capacities: slouchy hobos and messengers in soft calfskin for day bags, a utilitarian duffle for travel, and the Sohoclutch pochette in emerald, nude, zebra or dark grey as Kate’s take on red carpet accessorizing. Said clutch is designed to lie deceptively flat, while still leaving room for a woman’s essentials.
Monochrome-colored bags come with a sassy zebra lining, which also crops up as an all-over print on bags such as the limited-edition zebra Gloucester travel bag. Other than the greys, greens, blacks, and nudes that permeate the collection, however, Kate’s choice for a “dash of color” was a bright candy apple red.
Judging by the simplistic design and inherent quality of the bags, as well as Longchamp’s ability to wax poetic about the partnership, it’s clear the collaboration was a successful one. Kate, for her part, sums it up nicely: “I’ve been working for Longchamp for a while, we just get on.”
