The Five Trends You’ll be Wearing this Fall

By Eva Medoff, March 31st, 2010

This fall, you’re going to look like a naughty school girl from the British highlands who moonlights as an hour glass-figured femme fatale. How is this possible? We break it down for you with five of fall’s must-have trends.

1. The Sherpa Jacket

Formerly the province of rural sheep herders and 14 year olds with an American Eagle fetish, sherpa has hit the big time on Burberry’s spring runways. Burberry pretty much owns the youthful, casual jacket—from updated trenches with oversized colors, to military coats and cropped blazers—so the presence of the volumizing white collars (and in some cases entire coats) on the Prorsum runway could single-handedly bring about a sherpa renaissance. But for those that prefer their outerwear with a more dramatic flair, throw on some…

2. Capes

Less super hero and more Robin hood, this season’s capes have a rugged, gothic vibe. Rag & Bone sent thick plaid and grey wool ponchos down the runway over a patchwork of outdoorsy separates. Despite the designers’ influence of 20s mountain climbers, the capes would look at home over a school girl’s plaid skirt and socks. Or, instead of socks, why not try…

When stepping out on the town, however, trade in the school girl jacket for…

3. The Camel Coat

We may or may not have gone on a fruitless search to find the coat Ali MacGraw wore in Love Story (along with the rest of her wardrobe from the iconic 70s film). With these camel dreams by Giambattista Valli, we’re okay with settling for an updated version. Camel coats are timeless outerwear that would fit perfectly over a…

4. Bosom-Baring Bodice

Though low-cut dresses are nothing new, this season designers like Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana showed off skin-tight bodices on girls with actual chests—suggesting that the dresses and corset tops would flatter a curvy woman’s body, rather than only a pin thin waif’s. With a 50s flair here (Vuitton) and a 40s flair there (Dolce), this last fall trend allows daytime’s juvenile delinquent to grow into a night time screen siren.
