Trailer: Serge Gainsbourg Biopic
By Eva Medoff, August 16th, 2010
The trailer for the Serge Gainsbourg biopic, simply titled, Gainsbourg, has hit the Internet. With frightfully dramatic, stereotypical instrumental music and appearances from all the key players (Bardot, Birkin), the clip is an ostentatious, deliciously over the top rendering of the life of the French musician. While we can’t say this is dramatic gold (perhaps the story of a musician who rises out of despair into a life of wild success and hedonism has been told one too many times), it certainly looks like great fun. The film starts off with Gainsbourg’s upbringing in Nazi-occupied France, but seems to spend the majority of its time in the legendary decadence of the 60s, with Gainsbourg smoking like a chimney, fending off mobs of fans and conducting his famous love affairs.
French model Laetitia Casta, whose bust has been splashed around on blogs and magazines ever since she walked Louis Vuitton’s cleavage-baring fall runway, takes a turn as Gainsbourg’s brief lover Brigitte Bardot. Casta didn’t strike us as a dead-ringer for the gap-toothed bombshell, but makeup and styling have gone a long way. As for Gainsbourg’s lover and wife Jane Birkin, the gorgeous Brit for which the Hermès bag is named, the role went to the late actress Lucy Gordon, reminding us of what a loss her death was (Gordon committed suicide last year).
