Netflix This: Public Enemies
By Eva Medoff, May 18th, 2010
This movie isn’t exactly obscure, but we still feel it managed to slip under the radar and didn’t receive all the accolades it deserved. First of all, it’s a Michael Mann film, so you can expect large, beautiful expanses of Midwest America. Second of all, it stars the superb Johnny Depp as his childhood hero, John Dillinger, and the aforementioned Marion Cotillard as his main squeeze. Throw in some thrilling historical detail (not entirely accurate—if you’d like accuracy, we suggest you read the book, which is equally fabulous) and some gorgeous 30s styling, and you’ve got a biopic we could watch over and over again.
Lady Blue
By Eva Medoff, May 18th, 2010
Dior has taken the simple concept of selling a handbag to new heights with its Lady Dior campaign. Yes, it’s about selling products—but this is the closest product placement has ever come to art. The third installment in the series, starring Parisian beauty Marion Cotillard, takes place in Shanghai, with David Lynch of Mulholland Drive fame directing. As expected, the music is eerie, the scenery both alluring and foreboding and the plot fluid as it balances on the precipice between dream and reality. This is a David Lynch film.

Cannes Fashion So Far
By Eva Medoff, May 17th, 2010
Cannes is where fashion and film are put on their most glamorous and global stage. While the mingling of beautiful scenery on the French riviera and beautiful stars on the red carpet might sometimes overpower the actual films, we see no harm in highlighting the fashion. It isn’t Old Hollywood, but with all the elegance, high-end designs and star wattage involved, it’s the closest thing you’ll find in France.

Netflix This: Bonnie and Clyde
By Eva Medoff, May 10th, 2010
If you haven’t seen the original, now is the time: Bonnie and Clyde is about to become the latest in a long line of Hollywood remakes. Now, we aren’t saying the new version will be terrible, necessarily, but we think this tidbit speaks for itself: the new Bonnie Parker will be played by Hilary Duff, most recently seen in the TV movie Beauty and the Briefcase. On the other hand, the beautiful, black and white 1967 version cast a regal Faye Dunaway as the girl outlaw, looking lethal with a beret and a shotgun. Add to that Warren Beatty in his prime, acclaimed director Arthur Penn and the French New Wave as muse, and you’ve got a landmark of American cinema.

molto bene
By Tiffany Yannetta, April 28th, 2010
One of Italy’s greatest gifts to the rest of the world (besides the food and the fashion, of course) is their knack for creating some pretty unforgettable cinematic moments; it’s almost impossible to go to the Trevi Fountain and not think of Anita Ekberg, in an evening gown, curves and all, wading through it. To make sure that we never lose those images, Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, with a helping hand from Gucci, will restore two classics this year: Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Luchino Visconti’s Il Gattopardo. And since both films are approaching their 50th anniversaries, it seems like a pretty good way to celebrate.
